As a staff photographer for Sports Illustrated, Bill Frakes knows the importance of the right tools to get the job done. Over his career, he’s worked in over 125 countries for clients that include Nike, Coca Cola, IBM, Nikon, and Kodak. He’s won the “Newspaper Photographer of the Year” award, and served on the staff of the Miami Herald that won the Pulitzer Prize for Hurricane Andrew Coverage. Recently, Bill took the time to tell us why he uses LaCie and some of his favorite products.
www.billfrakes.com | www.strawhatvisuals.com | How has LaCie made your life as a photographer easier? LaCie hard drives are an essential part of my workflow. I use them constantly, everywhere I go. From backing up the hundreds of gigs of images I shoot at the Olympics to organizing files for a multimedia production or a story on six-man football in western Nebraska, I never have to worry about losing a picture.
I always back up files on at least two hard drives, so if something happens to one—it’s stolen, smashed, etc.—I always have a backup. The two-drive workflow works especially well when creating multimedia productions—I can work off one drive while my partner, Laura Heald, works off another. Very little of my work is done indoors in a safe studio environment; I’m always on the move, and these drives can move with me.
Where have you been with your LaCie drives? I've been on six different continents with my LaCie drives.

Tell us why and how you bought your first LaCie drive. For both my first desktop and mobile drives, I initially chose the LaCie drives because of how they looked, but it’s the performance that keeps me coming back. This was especially true with the Ruggeds. They just look tough and strong—they inspire confidence visually. How do you see the world of digital storage developing and how will it make your job easier? Easier isn't as important as more secure although it is nice. I spend tremendous amounts of energy and resources creating images, and I have to be able to safely get them from point A to point B, which is why I like using my Rugged so much. I can easily make multiple copies of my images and store them in multiple places with great confidence that they will be safe. How long have you used LaCie products? At least 6 years. When the FA Porsche designed drives first came out, I bought a number of them, and I’ve been buying LaCie ever since. I actually bought several of LaCie’s DVD writers before I purchased a hard drive. Tell us about a project you’ve worked on with a LaCie product. I work on every project with my LaCie drives, from a film calling attention to the plight of the homeless to big time athletic events like the Final Four. I carry software, memos, and images on my drives. It's like a library in your pocket. |
